State Medical Boards

The blue orb indicates medical and osteopathic board decisions are available online to the public without charge [or will do shortly]. Nearly every state will send consumers copies of licensing actions upon request. There is usually a small fee to cover photocopying and postage. A number of states make ordering even easier by putting forms on the web or by accepting requests electronically.

If you aren't familiar with the information available from state licensing boards, try these suggestions: or Jump to the list of State Medical Boards

Be sure to search the correct board database for the physician's credential: a physician or medical doctor is designated by MD; an osteopathic physician is designated by DO. If you can't find the physician, contact the board.
Use the License Look-Up to find the physician by his or her last name to check the status of the license.
In some states disciplinary information is included in the License Look-Up; if this is the case, follow the link.
Next look for the Physician Profile search and look up the physician – some boards are kind enough to link the Physician Profile to the License Look-Up, but not all state boards have Physician Profiles available. The profiles contain information about the physician's education, post-graduate training, board certification or board eligibility, faculty appointments, teaching responsibilities, hospital admission privileges, insurance plans accepted, contact information, disciplinary decisions, and reportable medical malpractice claims.
Make sure you understand the meaning of what you read; as a rule the boards take pains to provide definitions for terms like reportable medical malpractice claims and license status.
State boards that don't make their decisions available on line provide information for ordering copies. Delivery is relatively swift – plan on a week or two.
If the License Look-Up or Physician Profile indicates the physician was disciplined but offers no detail, you can check the board home page for lists of disciplinary actions, newsletters, press releases, or meeting minutes to find more information while you wait for your copies.
